This season Wainuiomata Hockey Club joined the ‘Go the H2O’ movement that promotes water as the drink choice. By joining they were eligible for player of the day certificates with free pool passes to Council pools in the region. To celebrate their season and prize giving, Wainuiomata Hockey Club chose Naenae Pool as the venue so that the players could use their pool passes.
The club spoke to families about the ‘Go the H2O’ kaupapa before committing to water only and junk free sidelines. Parents were keen on the shift towards healthy choices and loved the pool passes as a reward. Families agreed to support the junior players to bring a water bottle to every game and practice.
The astro turf surface means that hockey games are fast paced. Being water only, helps the club to keep players hydrated and nurture their wellbeing. Each coach also supports players by starting each break at games and practices with a water stop. It helped that there is a water filling station at the Fraser Turf where they play.
Parent Coach Robyn Morete says, “Our communication (behaviour) to families also shifted, to support this change. We always iterated to families that players must have safety gear (mouth guard and shin pads) at trainings and games. This was extended to include a water bottle too”.
The club enjoy the opportunity to celebrate the ‘Go the H2O’ player of the day rewards and the children by profiling players each week on the club Facebook page. Robyn said, “Our players and families look forward to these updates”.
The ‘Go the H2O’ movement is Turning the Tide towards a healthier Hutt, it is great to see Wainuiomata Hockey Club getting on board with this kaupapa.
